"Alice in Wonderland"
from 1915 is the third film version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. It is an outstanding silent movie that has lost nothing of its beauty and gripping atmosphere even after almost one century. The movie does not feature too many special effects for which there was neither budget nor enough technical achievements back in 1915. Instead, it focuses on wonderful exterior shots and extravagant, imaginative costumes. Of the original, extremely long version (around 60 minutes) only 42 minutes are available so far which nevertheless present the essence of the story of "Alice in Wonderland". The movie distinguishes itself from the rather kitschy movie versions that were created after 1930 by its clear depiction of events. In combination with the improvised live soundtrack of Augsburger Tafelconfect and Bors D. Hegenbart a dreamlike atmosphere is created in which the transition from the harmless counting-out rhyme to surrealistic nightmare rises seamlessly. A soundtrack was added of the first performance on the 17th of March 2005 to the 42-minute DVD version. Due to assistance by the German "Musikrat", a 60-minute original version could be acquired.
